Manchester United players failed to break through Chelsea’s defence , despite making a number of attacking changes in the second half.
Manchester United went a goal down shortly after the half-time break at Stamford Bridge after a stunning header from Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata.
Mourinho responded by adding some creativity to his attack, with Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini coming on for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Phil Jones.
Jesse Lingard replaced Ashely Young with 10 minutes to go.
But Mourinho admits Antonio Conte’s defensive-minded substitutions moments later made it difficult for United to break down Chelsea’s back line.
“My thoughts with the substitutions was to bring [on] a third creative man,” Mourinho told MUTV after the game.
“And then when Chelsea started putting defensive players on like [Antonio] Rudiger and [Danny] Drinkwater.
“And all the defensive bodies in, it was difficult to penetrate with the creativity of [Marcus] Rashford and [Anthony] Martial and the way to go would be with an amazing Marouane [Fellaini].
“With these different options, we created lots of chances.
“[Fellaini] had one with the chest and the volley and then the second ball Rashford shoots [just wide] with the left foot when [Thibaut] Courtois had absolutely no chance.
